What packaging materials are biodegradable?

biodegradeable-packaging

Using biodegradable and sustainable packaging is easier than it once was due to the fact that we are all conscious and more aware of our surroundings and the effect we have on the environment. Living a contemporary ‘green’ lifestyle is easier than it ever has been, and although there is still a place for plastics and materials that are not biodegradable, especially if they are recyclable, there are now more alternatives available.

Packaging is part of our everyday life from the food we eat to the parcels we receive, so it’s important when searching for biodegradable packaging that it is right for your product and logistics. Many materials pose a huge threat to our environment and by opting for reused, recyclable or biodegradable options, you can do your part to help an ever-growing issue.

So, what packaging materials are biodegradable?

Cardboard and paper

Recyclable and biodegradable, paper and cardboard are ideal materials for packaging as consumers can either choose to reuse their box or recycle it. Although not instantly, cardboard and paper will decompose eventually, meaning they don’t pose such a large threat like plastic does to landfills.

Packaging items made from cardboard and paper:

Compostable Bags

Compostable bags can be composted along with garden waste and degrade fairly quickly, making a great alternative to standard plastic bags. Transpack stocks two brands of compostable bags, 30-micron NatureFlex ™ which is a film made from wood pulp. It is sourced from sustainable locations and made from renewable sources making it a great environmentally friendly choice. NatureFlex™  doesn’t even need to be Industrially composted – it can be composted at home in a garden composter.

Nativia® also a PLA Poly Lactic-acid bio-based resin is made from corn or other starch/sugar sources. It is a good choice for sustainable packaging being industrially compostable, biodegradable and with the use of a PLA self-adhesive tape makes our new range of greeting card bags 100% biodegradable.

Biodegradable Polythene

Our biodegradable polythene bags can be recycled and they will also biodegrade quite quickly. An additive is incoprorated when the film is manufactured which means that the film will break down into carbon dioxide, water, biomass and minerals when in landfill. These bags are often used in shops and delicatessens.

Living in a throw away culture has caused damage to our planet and the less harmful materials we use the better. By opting for biodegradable and compostable materials, or products which can be recycled and reused, you are helping a greater good.

As consumers are becoming more aware of the effects our culture is having on the planet, they are searching for more eco-friendly options. As a business, it is smart to opt for these biodegradable materials not only for the main reason, helping our environment, but for your business. The more eco-friendly a business is, the more popular it will be amongst a wider range of consumers, thus ensuring repeat and future business from environmentally conscious people.
